Who's your audience?

Based on client's criteria I have decided that my target audience will be age group between 5-7 years old.

"I call kids between ages 4 and 6 the “muddy middle,” because they’re stuck right in between the cute, cuddly preschool children and the savvy, sophisticated elementary-schoolers. They’re too old for games designed for toddlers, but they can’t quite read yet, so they struggle with sites and apps geared toward older kids. Unfortunately, you rarely see a digital product designed specifically for this age group, because they’re hard to pin down, but these little guys are full of ideas, knowledge, creativity, and charisma."

Give instructions that are simple and clear.

Break tasks down into more manageable steps. Children aged 5 to 7 are not yet able to set goals and carry out projects over a longer period of time.

Give rules to help this age understand new environments and expectations. However, when they are following the rules, they quickly notice when others do not. That is why tattling is common at this age!

Appeal to children's curiosity and need to explore. Children have a natural joy of learning many different things.

Focus on doing. Children aged 5 to 7 are more interested in the process of making or doing something than they are with the end product.  Hands-on experiences for this age group are very important because they need to be doing whether it is making a snack, planting seeds, or playing games.

Encourage cooperation, not competition.

Playing outside improves children’s immune systems, increases their physical activity, stimulates their imagination and creativity, and above all – makes them feel alive, as they use all their senses while playing. The list of benefits also includes developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as developing respect for nature and the other living things.

bushcraft activities

bushcraft activity books

This book is from Walt Disney and it is bushcraft book of my childhood. I think it would be great for my target audience because I was using this book around my age 6-7 as well and thanks to the majority of illustration it was very easy for me to understand the point. I remembrer that I was using this book even in my older age, so there is the possibility that it might be for wider range of audience.

what do i want to do?

I have been thinking about all the activities the client gave us to choose from and my favorites are : Make a Bug Hotel, Cooking over a fire or Making shadow pictures.

These are some examples of how I imagine bug hotel based on my experiences from my childhood. When I was in my elementary school, we used to building these kinds of houses in the forest for little bugs, animals or "fairies" .

What I found interesting was how other people building bug hotel. When I put Bug Hotel in Google in English, it found me quite "posh" bugs hotels compared to the Czech ones or the ones I am used to. I would say that the main difference is, that the "Czech" ones are built by kids and are just temporary so it will not affect the nature very much. On the other hand, the "others" ones are "proper" houses, built to last longer and probably build with a adults help.

I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND ...

I HAVE DECIDED TO CHANGE MY DIRECTION A LITTLE BIT IN TERMS OF ACTIVITIES I PICKED. I want children to put their hands-on, to wake their interest in surviving in the "wild nature". What I remember from my childhood was that I was always really exciting about building some shelters for myself, for my brother, soft toys or little animals. And I believe that every children like building shelters where you can play later on with your dolls, with your friends ect ... So one of my activities I would like to do is to encourage them in building shelters, give them simple idea about building a basic tent. One thing I am concerned about is if it is suitable for my audience which is 5-7 yrs old. However, I think that for this group of children I can design "basic" version of survival shelter/tent and turn it into fun.

In context to this activity, I have decided that y second activity will be cooking over the fire where I can give them some simple recipes that can cook over the fire, but also how to set the fire and how to build the fireplace correctly. I think that all these activities could teach kids a lot because it is not just about survival, but also about adventure and hopefully, they will have something to remember and also for parents.

how am i planning to do it?

What style am I going for? I have been thinking about "realistic" or "illustrative" style of my e-book but at the end I have decided to go for illustrations, or maybe collages for example like Lauren Child and her Charlie and Lola.

I have decided to go for guide character through my design. I picked wolf, or wolf baby, as my character. I think it is a nice link with Worcester Wolf maskot.

children's layout

Activity

What I like is the "Tell me a story" pebbles when children can paint on them and tell stories accordingly the pictures. But the task was to create some 3d artifact. After a while of thinking, I have come out with an idea of connection ludo and the pebbles. the board will be on the activity page and kids can design their own figures and customize them. The figures will be the pebbles that they can paint on of I will include some designs on the activity page and they can cut them out and glue them on the pebbles.
